Ariz. Police Chief Could Resign Over Federal Funding Scandal

Phoenix Public Safety Manager Jack Harris may be stepping down as head of the city’s police department for allegedly inflating kidnapping reports in a scheme to land millions in federal funding.

Phoenix Public Safety Manager Jack Harris may be stepping down as head of the city’s police department for allegedly inflating kidnapping reports in a scheme to land millions in federal funding.

Two sources told MyFoxPhoenix that the police chief has already packed up his office and moved out, but his official status is unconfirmed.

In 2008, Phoenix’s police department reported 300 kidnappings, earning the city the moniker of the ‘kidnapping capital of the world.'

But police now say some crimes were incorrectly filed as kidnappings, and the U.S. Department of Justice and city management are looking into possible misuse of federal funds.

At a Wednesday morning news conference, Harris angrily denied the accusations.

"Anyone that wants these stars can come and get them. But I've got news for you -- I'm not giving them to you. You're going to have to take them,” he told reporters.

City Manager David Cavazos said there will be a press conference on Friday to discuss the matter.
