Nine Los Angeles schools locked down after a school police officer was shot are reopening with extra security and crisis counselors.

Los Angeles Unified School District police will be out in force Thursday at El Camino Real High School and other campuses in the Woodland Hills area of the west San Fernando Valley.

Some 9,000 students were held in classrooms for hours on Wednesday after a school police officer confronted a man breaking into cars outside the school. Authorities say Officer Jeff Stenroos was shot in the chest but his body armor stopped the round. He was released from a hospital and school police say he's recovering at home from his bruises.
